Obituary for  Jerald Marlin Brightbill

Jerald Marlin Brightbill was born June 11, 1944, in Pomona, Calif. Jerry was the second of three children born to Marlin and Eunice Brightbill. In search of work, his family moved to McFarland, Calif., Los Alamos, N.M., Louden, Tenn., and Chicago, Ill before settling in North Manchester, Ind. Jerry graduated from Manchester High School in 1962, and attended Manchester College his freshman year. Jerry spent the next two years in Brethren Volunteer Service before returning to Manchester College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1969.

During his Junior year at Manchester College, he met Sandra Yenser. The two were married a year later on December 14, 1968. After graduating Jerry and Sandy moved west to Tonasket, Wash. where Jerry taught at Tonasket Elementary School.
In 1971, Jerry became a father. Three months after the birth of John, the couple took jobs as teachers at The American School of Kinshasa, Zaire. Jerry taught 5th grade and built a dark room for the students to explore photography. Spending two years abroad had a significant impact on their lives and resulted in life-long friendships.

Returning to the U.S. in 1973, Jerry spent the next four years teaching in Benton County Indiana and completing his MA degree in Education at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. Jerry and Sandy’s second son, Nathan, was born in 1976.

The Brightbill family returned to Tonasket in 1977, where Jerry resumed teaching in the Tonasket School District, completing a 33-year career in 2002. In the early 1980s, Jerry co-wrote a grant to obtain four Radio Shack computers — the first computers in the Tonasket Elementary/Jr. High School. Many of Jerry’s students have kept in touch over the years. One recently expressed that Jerry was the reason he became a teacher.

Ever since he was a young child, Jerry loved tools. Throughout his years, Jerry designed and built many things. One of his first projects was building a kayak during college. When the Brightbills moved back to Tonasket, Jerry built the family’s first house. He became an accomplished woodworker, and his furniture is cherished by his family and friends. When a new Elementary School was built, Jerry salvaged wood from the old Elementary building and built beautiful birch bookcases for every new classroom. Ever inventive, Jerry built a large Wheel of Fortune-inspired spinning wheel for his students to practice their spelling words.

Over the past decade, Jerry loved being a grandfather. His most recent woodworking projects included building wooden cars and desk lamps while showing his grandsons how to use the same tools his father and grandfather shared with him.

His parents, Marlin and Eunice Brightbill, his sister, Janet Berkebile, and his son, Nathan predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Sandra, his son, John Brightbill and daughter-in-law Gail Brightbill, of Moses Lake, Wash., daughter-in-law Leah Calvo and son-in-law Justin Calvo, of Seattle, four grandchildren Jaren Calvo, Miri Calvo, Rylan Brightbill Calvo and Levi Brightbill Calvo, and his sister and brother-in-law, June and Glenn Brechbiel of Tucson, Ariz.

A remembrance will be scheduled at a later date. If you wish, donate in his name to the Okanogan County Historical Society, PO Box 1129, Okanogan, WA 98840

Obituary for Carl Selavka

Carl Selavka
October 11, 2023
Carl Selavka, age 95, of Sun City Center, Florida, was called by the Lord on October 11, 2023. After a brief Hospital stay, Carl said farewell peacefully in the loving hands and hearts of his sons Michael Phillip, Edgar Lester, and Carl Matthew.
Carl lived a vibrant life, enjoying multiple careers involving military service as both an enlisted Marine and Army Officer (LTC; Ret), Sports Leader, Tradesman as an HVAC Tech, Farmhand and Arborist; as well as a Shriner and American Legionnaire.
Born on January 17, 1928, he was the second youngest of 8 children born to Russian immigrants Michael Selavka and Tekla Borodin in Windham, Connecticut. Carl fought with the Marines in WWII, then attended the University of Connecticut where he quarterbacked the football team to the Yankee Conference Championship (in 1952). He returned to the military as a U.S. Army officer pilot – with unique selection onto Test Pilot Teams for the Sikorsky CH-54 Skycrane and a Grumman fixed-wing spy plane – and served during the Korean War and Vietnam Conflict (two tours). During his service, Carl was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, and multiple Air Medals including one with the Valor device.
Carl retired from the Army after 22 years then obtained a master’s degree in education from Central Connecticut State College before continuing as an educator and innovator in the field of athletics at the High School level in Portland, East Hampton, and North Stonington (Connecticut) and Hadley (Massachusetts). He coached basketball at the college level (Westfield State College) as well baseball for American Legion teams throughout New England.
Carl had married Janet Smith of Windsor, Connecticut in 1953 and – after his military retirement – settled in Middle Haddam Connecticut in 1970 where they continued to raise their three sons and resumed careers in education. When Janet was offered the Principal position at Hopkins Academy, they eagerly relocated to Hadley, Massachusetts. Carl continued in athletics as the Hopkins Academy girls’ basketball coach for many years. During off-seasons Carl spent countless happy years working on the Goulet family farm in Hadley. Always seeking to develop new skills, Carl obtained a license as an HVAC technician and took courses to become an arborist.
Carl and Janet moved to Sun City Center, Florida in 2009 to continue their 25 years of New York Yankees preseason training camp passion. They quickly immersed themselves in the community as volunteers in the Security Patrol and singing in choirs at the Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church and Ruskin United Methodist Church. Carl enjoyed woodworking with the Sawdust Engineers and sang with the Sun City Center Men’s Chorus for over a decade.
Carl will be fondly remembered by his 3 sons, 6 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren – as well as the extended Selavka and Smith families throughout the United States – as a leader, teacher, and supportive mentor whose wry sense of humor made everyone smile as he entered any room.
If you wish to be notified of a Memorial Celebration to be held in the future – or to coordinate charitable contributions in Carl’s honor – please contact the family using akvales@gmail.com.

Obituary for Evelyn Grace Frantz

1926 – 2023

Evelyn Grace Frantz, age 96, entered the presence of the Lord and was reunited with her husband Jay on Tuesday morning, July 18, 2023.

On October 22, 1926, Evelyn Grace Lentz was born at home in Richland, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Iram and Sadie Lentz, joining older brothers Elwood and Arthur (her sister Ruth died in infancy before Evelyn was born). Her sister Lela was born a few years later, and then her brother Sterling. The family grieved the tragic drowning loss of Sterling when he was eight years old.

After graduating from Richland High School in 1944, Evelyn was a student at Elizabethtown College. Jay Frantz, who served as a Marine in World War II, arrived on the scene at Elizabethtown College, and a new chapter in Evelyn’s life began! They dated in the spring and summer of 1947, and were married on October 25, 1947. They lived in Lebanon PA from 1947-1952, where Ron was born in 1949. Life was full, with finishing college (they graduated in 1950), working various jobs, and raising their baby boy.

They moved to Indiana in 1952, where Jay began his teaching career. Their first home was in Elkhart, where Donna was born (1952), and then they moved to Mishawaka, where Leanne was born in 1959. Evelyn worked for many years as a nurse’s aide in a nursing home and at St. Joseph Hospital in South Bend, and graduated from Indiana Vocational Technical College in 1983 with an LPN degree. Hobbies together included bowling, Canasta parties, camping, and trips to Pennsylvania and the New Jersey shore. They were faithful members of Crest Manor Church of the Brethren in South Bend.

In 1989 Jay retired from teaching, and they moved back “home” to Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and enjoyed many reunions with family (sister Lela and her family), and old Elizabethtown friends, and they attended Palmyra Church of the Brethren.

In 2011 they moved into an independent-living apartment at Londonderry Village in Palmyra. During Jay’s final years, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2017. Jay passed away in March of 2018. In early 2020, Evelyn moved into an assisted living facility in Tucson, Arizona, to be near daughter Leanne and her family, but in April 2020, after the pandemic began, she moved into their home, where she lived until her passing.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents Iram and Sadie, all of her siblings (Elwood, Arthur, Ruth, Lela, and Sterling), and one granddaughter (Elise). She is survived by her three children: Ron Frantz and wife Patrice of Grand Haven, MI; Donna Conner of Galveston, TX; and Leanne Barkley and husband Dale of Tucson, AZ; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 8th, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Palmyra Church of the Brethren. Family and friends are invited for visitation from 10-11 a.m. and there will be a luncheon following the service. Burial will take place in Grand View Memorial Park, Annville, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Palmyra Church of the Brethren. Obituary for Carole Harris Miller

Carole Harris Miller, 78, of Carlisle passed away peacefully on June21,2022 at the home of her daughter in Cazenovia, NY. Born in Harrisburg, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Luella Harris of Camp Hill.

Carole graduated from the Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing in 1964 and then began her 44-year career at the Carlisle Hospital in the maternity department.

Carole was blessed with a true affinity for animals. As a child on Packard Lane, she would bring baby chicks home to live in her bedroom. Though the kennel was named for her dogs, Carole was always the ultimate “foxy-lady” and was widely known for her genuine love of and hospitality towards all pets placed in her care. Carole owned the kennel until March 2020.

Carole loved her shelties, and many families were able to benefit from the beautiful puppies. She held sheltie reunions at her farm where the puppies could be reunited for a day of playtime with siblings and cousins.

Carole also took in animals who needed a place to go. No animal was ever turned away from her kennels or cat apartments. She had several long- term residents, rescue animals waiting to find a family, and animals who had lost their home and needed a place to live out their lives. Chickens, llamas, goats, horses, sheep, donkeys, and alpacas all had a place at her farm, and she loved and cared for them all.

Obituary for  Jose Luis Torres (Pepito)

Jose Luis Torres (Pepito), 83, of Lebanon, passed away peacefully Friday morning January 7, 2022. He was the Husband of Nancy (Erb, Yonker) Torres for 18 years, and son of the late Jose Isabel Torres and Filomena Vera Vera. Jose is preceded in death by his first wife Ellen Christine (Ruhl) Torres, whom he was married to for 38 years, and is survived by 3 siblings, Blanca Lidia Torres Vera, Angel David Torres Vera, Edilberto Torres Vera; 4 children, Linda Heisey wife of Jeff, Darlene Weaver wife of Terry, Arlene Albrite wife of Wade, David Torres husband of Esther; step daughters Jennifer Mirth wife of Chris, Suzanne Miller wife of Michael; 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Born in Puerto Rico, February 19, 1938, Jose worked from his youth on the family coffee farm in the mountains of Castañer. Jose’s childhood was filled with tropical forest adventures, folk remedies, and mysterious stories and country legends. Like most people in his area of Puerto Rico his family was of limited means but hardworking and resourceful. Circumstances were rustic with long walks to school, homework done by candlelight, meals cooked on open wood fires, …for a glimpse of his culture picture a young Jose Torres climbing a coconut tree barefooted with a machete in hand, something he often did.

As a young man Jose took employment as a lab tech at a hospital founded by the Church of the Brethren, “Castañer General Hospital” in Puerto Rico. There he would meet his future bride Ellen (Christine) Ruhl who was pursing her nursing internship at the same hospital. They married in PR then relocated to Richland, PA, where they had Linda, followed by “the twins” Darlene and Arlene. After a few years, they purchased a house in Buffalo Springs where their family grew with a fourth child, David.

Starting his new life in Pennsylvania was challenging; a different culture, language, cold winters, and walking to work until he could afford his first car. But Jose would find support from family, friends, and the fellowship of believers at Richland COB and later Midway COB where in 1984 he made a public profession of his faith in Christ.

Jose had an amazing work ethic, when he put his mind to a task he worked at it tirelessly for family, friends, and even people he didn’t know through many disaster relief projects. His first job was at a shoe factory in Richland, then employed at the Middletown airport, and finally 33 years at PennDOT as a driver then as a mechanic.

He worked very hard but he always made family vacations an annual priority. The family will never forget the 1979 month long tour across the USA in their Ford station wagon (with no air conditioning) and our Jayco popup camper in tow. It was a quintessential American vacation with stops at Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Grand Tetons and most importantly… Jose always desirous of broadening his children’s education … the Corn Palace in Mitchell South Dakota.

His hobbies and interests were many: camping, woodworking, carvings, painting, antiquing, restoring old cars…etc. Some of his creations might be thought of as folk art, often with biblical themes. His latest creation was a replica of the Ark of the Covenant which he donated to Myerstown COB.

Jose had certain “ways” about him. He was at his best when there was a need that he could help with. His gift was acts of service. Looking back on his life we will always remember this about Jose. Sometimes his acts of service reached heroic proportions like when he jumped into the Susquehanna River in February 1969, saving a woman who attempted to take her own life by jumping into the icy river. He was a man of action, and that’s how he showed in his own way, love. That’s how we’ll remember Jose, willing to serve even when it would cost him. This is the God given gift that gave him a sense of purpose.

A viewing for Jose will be held Friday, January 14, 2022 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM at South Lebanon Community Church, 13 Evergreen Road, Lebanon, PA 17042. A funeral service will occur Friday, January 14, 2022 at 2:30 PM, 13 Evergreen Road, Lebanon, PA 17042. A burial will occur Friday, January 14, 2022 at 3:30 PM at Midway Cemetery, 13 Evergreen Road, Lebanon, PA 17042.
